INNOVATION OF SCULPTURE LANGUAGE IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERACTION BETWEEN EASTERN AND WESTERN CULTURES - THE EXAMPLE OF LIU YUNGANG'S ART PRACTICE
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
Liu Yungang (刘永刚, b.1964) is one of the leading artists in the field of contemporary Chinese sculpture. His artistic practice demonstrates striking innovative features in the context of the interaction between Eastern and Western cultures. Training in Germany in his early years had a significant impact on his work, particularly through the influence of German Expressionism, which emphasizes the direct expression of emotion and the strong tension of form. At the same time, he drew inspiration from traditional Chinese culture, especially studying the aesthetic beauty of ancient characters such as the small print style (xiaojuan). Using methods of abstract expression, he gave traditional characters new artistic life. In his works, Liu Yonggang seamlessly combines ancient cultural symbols with the language of contemporary sculpture, opening new avenues for innovation in the field. This article utilizes a methodology that combines historical approach and formal analysis to systematically examine Liu Yungang's artistic practice. The study aims to analyze his creative ideas, cultural significance and uniqueness of expressive forms, which contributes to understanding the innovative development of contemporary sculpture in the context of cultural interaction.
