«Game» as Concept in Buddhism Philosophy: Euristic Potential for Modern Game Studies
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
The development of game studies requires a gradual expansion of the range of theories and problems associated with the analysis of game components of culture. One significant area of research is the study of philosophical concepts related to the definition of game, in their historical dynamics, involving models and frameworks that have not previously been actively discussed. One such system is Buddhist philosophy, which contains significant original constructs aimed at defining the characteristics of game. An analysis of several Buddhist suttas reveals a fundamental duality in the definition of game. On the one hand, Buddhism posits the existence of game as an "excess," an activity that distracts a person from the path of enlightenment. On the other hand, game can become a "trick," which, on the contrary, directs a person onto the true path, helping them to connect with the true teaching. Even the life of the Buddha himself can be viewed as a unique "game" aimed at introducing people to the Dharma. Moreover, the distinction between the two types of game is determined not so much by their internal characteristics as by the external context, which determines the real purpose of game practice. At the present stage, a similar concept can be applied to the analysis of "serious gaming" as a practice associated not so much with the characteristics of the game system itself, but with an external discourse that determines the possibility of a practical orientation of gaming experience. Game studies itself is becoming one of the central discourses legitimizing the possibility of "serious" gaming.
